With the help of ADX, you can quantify the strength of a trend. ADXR measures the strength of a prevailing trend and defines if there is direction in a market. As a rule a reading above 25 is thought to be directional (it’s plotted from zero and over). The third line is the ADX – which is the average of the difference between D+ and D-. The higher the ADX, the higher the trend intensity, readings above 40 indicate a strong trend, whereas readings below 20 show a weak trend. ADX — ADX is one of the most powerful and reliable technical indicators I’ve found.

ADX is non-directional indicator, so it will quantify a trend’s strength regardless of whether its value is up or down. ADX is usually plotted in a chart window along with two lines known as the DMI . ADX is derived from the relationship of the DMI lines. The Average Directional Movement Index was developed by famed technical analyst Welles Wilder as an indicator of trend strength. Wilder developed the indicator for trading commodity futures.

The ADX indicator simply measures the strength of a trend and whether the price is in a trading or non-trading price movement. Welles Wilder is a wildly popular indicator for measuring strength of a trend. Unlike the RSI, ADX doesn’t determine whether the trend is bullish or bearish; but it measures the strength of the current trend.

• If the price is going UP, and the ADX indicator is also going UP, then we have the case for a bullish trend. While ADX provides information only about the strength of the trend, it is normally supplemented with Directional Index +DI and –DI for knowing the direction of the trend. Alright – so this is my own version of John Carter’s “10x Bars”… I have done multiple things that are different from his version so they are slightly different.. Conversely, the DI is negative when the difference between the historical low and current low is higher in value than the difference between the current high and prior high. For negative or minus DI, the difference between previous low and current low must be positive.

So it can be anticipated that a strong uptrend is going to follow. When +DI is above the -DI and ADX line is above 25 a strong uptrend is seen and thus at this point, the trader gets the signal to go long. Overall, a rise in the ADX line indicates an uptrend, however, if you remember, as mentioned earlier, ADX is non-directional, hence even in a downtrend, ADX might continue to rise.

Directional movement is negative when the previous low minus the current low is greater than the current high minus the previous high. This so-called Minus Directional Movement (-DM) equals the prior low minus the current low, provided it is positive.

The average directional movement index is calculated to reflect the expansion, or contraction, of the price range of a security over a period of time. The traditional setting for the ADX indicator is 14 time periods, but analysts have commonly used the ADX with settings as low as 7 or as high as 30. Lower settings will make the average directional index respond more quickly to price movement but tend to generate more false signals. Higher settings will minimize false signals but make the average directional index a more lagging indicator. Average Direction Index also known as ADX is a non-directional trend strength indicator. Its values oscillate between 0 to 100, higher the value higher is the strength of trend.

Cruising with the trend – ADX is one more indicator which helps in identifying whether the market is in a trading phase. A falling ADX line suggests the presence of a trading market and the absence of a trend. A rising ADX line favors moving averages; a falling ADX favors oscillators. This indicator perfectly helps to understand whether a trend exists or not. Most of our articles are centered across ‘Trend Following’ and its variations. The ADX indicator is used to assess the strength of the trend. However it is used in conjunction with two other lines +DI and -DI which decide the direction of the trend. The MACD is going to detect the trend reversals, while the ADX is showing either the trend is strong or fading. Wilder suggests that a strong trend is present when ADX is above 25 and no trend is present when below 20. When the ADX turns down from high values, then the trend may be ending.

Sell Entry Rules
